Minnesota farmer locking in break-even or better prices

A southwest Minnesota crop farmer is confident he’s locking in break-even or better prices for 2017.

Chris Hill of Brewster says a relatively strong corn and soybean market has afforded him opportunities to forward contract some of his grain.

“I got done with my break-evens and got my budget put in line, (then) looked at the prices and saw that there was profit in raising corn and soybeans.  So I decided to sell some at this point.  It’s either going to be a floor for my crop, or it’s going to be the best price.”

He recommends keeping a close eye on basis levels.

“Check all of your available markets because the basis might be better in one spot versus another and they’re only five miles apart.  So be vigilant with your marketing.”

Hill tells Brownfield he has no plans to change up his corn/soybean rotation this year, believing both crops will be profitable.
