Minnesota farmer a finalist in Dow’s Power to Do More contest

A southwest Minnesota farmer is one of ten finalists in Dow’s Power to Do More contest.

Matt Widboom of Worthington says his wife helped him with the entry, a photo of their farm with a caption describing it.

“One night I was going through our 13,000 photos on the computer and saw one that I thought looked good.  My wife came through and asked what I was working on, and I explained (the contest) to her.  And she told me that (photo) wasn’t going to work, saying there were a lot better pictures than that.”  He responded, “Ok dear, how about you help me out?”

The Widboom’s submitted a photo showing two of their sons waving from the edge of a soybean field Matt was combining.

Three winners will receive a fantasy sports trip for two and $10,000 dollars to donate to a local organization.

Widboom tells Brownfield he’d like to support a new mentoring program at the Worthington Area YMCA if he wins.

“(the program) was put together by Ken Moser (who) passed away just a few months ago, and he was a passionate, community-minded kind of guy.  And he had been working on this initiative with a few other community leaders, and it all seemed to just come together.  It would be really special to help out a legacy that he helped get launched.”

Online voting for the Power to Do More contest continues through May 21st.

Joining Widboom among the ten finalists are two farmers from Illinois, two from Iowa, two from Nebraska, as well as producers in Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
