Minnesota Ag Commissioner sending clean water message downstream
The commissioner of agriculture in Minnesota says his state has an opportunity to send a strong message about water quality to those downstream on the Mississippi River.
Dave Frederickson says Friday’s Town Hall Water Summit in Morris reinforces Governor Dayton’s pledge to improve water across the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and that Minnesota has a moral responsibility as a headwater state.
“We’re moving ahead. We’re trying to make sure that what goes down the Mississippi River is clean.”
In recent years, Minnesota has addressed impaired waters in a number of ways, including passage of a controversial Buffer Rule that’s been met with resistance by many in agriculture.
Frederickson tells Brownfield farmers need to be part of the solution.
“You don’t have to admit you’re part of the problem, just say ‘I want to be part of the solution’ and step up. The message that would send down the Mississippi River would be incredible.”
The Town Hall Water Summit is the second large public forum during Governor Dayton’s Year of Water Action.
He’s urging all Minnesotans to rethink water usage in daily life, make informed consumer choices, and talk to others about clean water protection and preservation.
