Midwest Seed Genetics re-launches

An independent seed company is re-emerging in an era of consolidation.

Veteran seedsman Don Funk has announced that he will relaunch the Midwest Seed Genetics brand. Funk’s son Dan tells Brownfield they plan to serve farmers across the Corn Belt and go back to the roots of the seed industry.  “We really see while there’s great excitement for what the future holds, but also there’s frustration and dissatisfaction and it could be argued that the people of agriculture are being left behind and we want to put them first again.”

He says the company plans to increase the opportunity for farmers to participate in process of defining what traits are needed for them to be successful.  “There will be a degree of involvement from of course our people, but then truly with the customers we interact with in terms of developing more product for the future.”

In the 90’s, Midwest Seed served farmers in a 13-state region of the Midwest and became part of the Channel seed company in 1999.  Channel, which was owned by Funk, was eventually acquired by Monsanto and the Midwest brand name was discontinued.

The company will be based in Kentland, Indiana.
