Michigan sets high risk bovine TB areas

The Michigan Department of Agriculture has set a “Potential High Risk Area” for bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB) in parts of five northern counties in the Lower Peninsula.

The declaration comes after the Department of Natural Resources confirmed four free-ranging white-tailed deer positive for bovine TB in Iosco, Oscoda, Presque Isle and Roscommon counties.

Cattle and bison herds within a six mile surveillance area of each confirmed deer will be tested within the next six months. An informational meeting is set for Monday, April 24 in Onaway for producers to learn how the discovery might impact their farms.

Bovine TB is an infectious bacterial disease affecting cattle and white-tailed deer that can affect the lungs, lymph nodes, and other parts of the body.
