Michigan Sale-a-bration auction tops $212K

Michigan’s largest youth livestock sale grossed more than $212,000 dollars following the Michigan Livestock Expo.

Sale manager Kelsey Maye tells Brownfield every year the auction grows as do the number of youth exhibitors.  “This year we had about 1,000 head under the pavilion and we’re getting close to our max.”

Maye says proceeds of the sale go toward champion youth and contribute to the Michigan Youth Livestock Scholarship Fund.  “The Grand Champion Steer is capped at $20,000, anything over that cap goes into the scholarship fund for us to give out to give out in future years, so really if you’re spending money on one animal you’re affecting hundreds of kids.”

The 2015 auction featured 36 individual lots. Meijer was the top spender at the sale with more than $50,000 dollars in lots purchased, and about half of that was spent on the Grand Champion Steer which was sold for a record $26,000 dollars.
