Michigan fruit growers benefit from recent weather

Moderate temperatures and scattered showers allowed Michigan fruit growers to better control insects and disease last week, but plants are showing signs of stress in dry soils.

The USDA reports newly planted tree and small fruits are struggling from a lack of moisture.

Late season peach and Japanese plum harvest continues in the southern and eastern counties, while apple harvest advanced in the northwest.

Blueberry harvest is winding down as growers were picking Liberty, Elliot, and other late season varieties.

For Michigan vegetable growers, cooler nights reduced foliar disease pressure in carrots.

The USDA says pumpkins and winter squash are sizing nicely, and sweetcorn harvest is ongoing as weather allows.
