Michigan farmers increase soybean plantings

The USDA says Michigan farmers plan plant to a record soybean crop this growing season.

Friday’s prospective plantings report put Michigan soybean acres at 2.35 million acres, up 14 percent from 2016.

Corn acreage is estimated at 2.3 million acres, down 4 percent.

Michigan farmers plan to cut winter wheat acres by 30 percent to 430,000 acres.

The state’s dry bean acreage is projected seven percent lower to 195,000.

USDA says sugarbeet acreage is estimated five percent lower at 143,000 acres.

All dry hay, at 880,000 acres, is up 10,000.  Oat planting intentions are up 15 percent from last year, at 75,000 acres.
