Recent rains throughout Michigan have improved crop quality.

The Great Lakes Regional Ag Statistics office says 78 percent of the state’s corn crop is in the dough stage, 33 percent is dented and condition improved an additional two points to 58 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 92 percent setting pods and soybean condition improved an additional three points to 64 percent good to excellent.

Dry beans are 95 percent blooming, 87 percent setting pods, 11 percent dropping leaves and dry bean condition remained steady at 50 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeet condition improved one point to 69 percent good to excellent, and two percent of the crop harvested.  The second cutting of alfalfa is 96 percent complete, third cutting is at 52 percent.

Recent rains have slowed late season blueberry harvest, but overall fruit crops have responded well to added moisture. Harvest continues for raspberries, peaches, plums, pears, and early season apples.  Vegetable growers are encouraged to scout for brown marmorated stink bugs and downy mildew.  Harvest of potatoes, processing tomatoes, cabbage, peppers and green beans is also underway.
