Michigan Corn stresses importance of NAFTA

The executive director of the Michigan Corn Growers Association says they’re pleased the Trump Administration is listening to the new Secretary of Agriculture on trade issues.

Jim Zook tells Brownfield Secretary Sonny Perdue has stepped up to bat to protect agriculture after the President threatened an executive order to withdraw from NAFTA.  “Fortunately our new secretary of ag was in place and in position and he was heard.  He expressed how important trade is, and especially the NAFTA agreement is, to all of our farmers.”

Zook says if the U.S. was to pull out of the NAFTA agreement, it could have a huge negative impact on prices and bring them below the cost of production.  “Sales to both Canada and to Mexico have increased to the point where every tenth row that is planted to corn goes to one of those two markets.”

He says the U.S. cannot abandon trade with Canada and Mexico, and farmers need to remain engaged with their congressmen on the importance of trade.
