Michigan celebrates Wheat Month

Governor Rick Snyder has declared July as Wheat Month in Michigan.

The Michigan Wheat Program says harvest started in the southern tier of the state around July 4^th and is working its way north.  As of Sunday, 34 percent of the crop was harvested, on pace with the five year average.

Michigan’s wheat production contributes nearly $390 million annually to the state’s economy. The 8,000 growers in the state produced more than 50 million bushels of wheat last year on 570,000 acres. This year’s production is expected to be 30 percent lower than 2016 because of low prices.
