Michigan agriculture featured in State of the State

Michigan’s growing agricultural industry was spotlighted in Governor Rick Snyder’s State of the State address.

Director of the Agriculture Department Jamie Clover Adams tells Brownfield the emphasis on the state’s more than $100 billion industry ties directly to the governor’s 21st Century Infrastructure Commission and the need for improvements, including increased access to broadband, for continual growth.  “He talked about integrating our infrastructure so that when you’re going to repair a road, take care of the sewer pipe underneath it or the broadband cable that needs to go in or the electric line so that we’re saving money.”

In his address, Governor Snyder specifically highlighted the 44 percent growth in Michigan’s dairy production over the last decade and Continental Dairy which is currently investing $50 million into butter production facilities, in addition to producing fairlife milk and other dairy related products.  Snyder also recognized the Clemens Food Group pork processing plant and the state’s craft beer industry.

Michigan Farm Bureau President Carl Bednarski says Snyder has consistently strived to understand the needs of farmers and continued improvements to the state’s infrastructure can only help improve the quality of life for all Michigan residents.
