Michigan ag groups recognized for community partnership in Flint water crisis

The Innovations Center for U.S. Dairy has honored Michigan ag groups for their response to support at risk families affected by the Flint water crisis.

Allison Stuby Miller with the Michigan Milk Producers Association tells Brownfield a healthy diet which includes nutrient dense foods like milk can help protect against the effects of lead poisoning. More than 36,000 gallons of dairy farmer member milk from the co-op was donated to mitigate health risks during the crisis.  “MMPA, along with the Kroger Company of Michigan, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and MSU Extension were together honored with an honorable mention for outstanding achievement in community partnership for coming together on this initiative.”

A federal state of emergency was declared in Flint, Michigan after high levels of lead were found in the city’s tap water.  The crisis is ongoing and MMPA has continued to donate milk to the Food Bank Council of Michigan’s regional food banks to support families in need.

Oakland View Farms & Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy in Maryland were recognized as the community partnership national winners for implementing a bioreactor to reduce nitrogen loading into the Chesapeake Bay.
