MABA launches water quality campaign

The Michigan Agri-Business Association has announced a new educational campaign to help farmers take water quality practices to the next level.

President Jim Byrum says improvements to water quality start with behavioral and practice changes in agriculture.  “We think this is more about changing some behavior and embracing some of the practices that we know will yield results and those include soil tests, cover crops and making sure we do the best job we can do with some of the new technologies.”

He says the campaign includes five major steps to improve water quality including soil testing regularly and following results, utilizing new fertilizer technology, stepping up management of cover crops, planning nutrient applications and working with certified crop advisors throughout the growing season.

MABA has also announced new online training for their certified fertilizer applicator program and a new manure applicator program set to begin this spring.
