Low-path avian flu detected in southern Tennessee county

A commercial chicken breeding operations in south-central Tennessee has tested positive for low pathogenic avian influenza.  This operation is operated by a different company from the one associated with last week’s detection of high-path avian influenza.  At this time, officials do not believe one premises infected the other.

As a precaution the infected flock has been depopulated and the premises is under quarantine.  Poultry within a 6 mile radius of the site are also under quarantine and are being monitor and tested.

The primary difference between the two viruses is the mortality rate. With low-path avian flu, domesticated poultry may show little or no signs of illness and high-path avian flu is often fatal.

Neither high-path nor low-path avian flu pose a risk to the food supply.
