Livestock producers looking at alternatives

For Dave Putoff, feed salesman for Mercer Landmark, whose marketing area includes Western Ohio, says discussions with his customers are centered on feeding options.

“My cattle producers, they’re all concerned about the prices of corn, the price of commodities,” said Putoff. “A lot of them are feeding gluten, distillers, last year we fed some soy hulls and wheat mids because of the price of corn, but they’re all asking questions about what’s going to be available and what we might be able to do.”

Considering how widespread the drought is, Putoff says he doesn’t have a good answer, but thinks some of these alternative feed sources will be tied up rather quickly, adding, “I don’t think there’s going to be any bargains anywhere.”
