Minnesota-based Land O’Lakes has announced plans to acquire the animal feed business of Southern States Cooperative.

The two companies entered into a supply agreement through Land O’Lakes’ WinField United crop inputs and insights unit earlier this year.

Land O’Lakes president and CEO Chris Policinski says the proposed acquisition would expand their relationship with Southern States and increase Land O’Lakes’ animal feed business in the eastern United States.  Distribution of Southern States’ branded products is expected to continue.

Southern States Cooperative, based in Richmond, Virginia, is the nation’s ninth largest compound feed producer with 1,200 retail outlets in 23 states.

The purchase is expected to be completed in January 2017.
