Lack of precip has parts of MO and IL abnormally dry

Lack of snowpack and winter moisture has an agronomist concerned about field conditions in much of Missouri and parts of Illinois.

Matt Montgomery, with Illinois-based Burrus Seed, says soils are what he calls uncomfortably dry.  “It’s very interesting – if you look at the US drought monitor they show most of the state of Missouri is yellow and a good portion of that filters into that western Illinois and southern Illinois area,” he says.  “

And while it is dry, Montgomery says he wouldn’t call the situation dire.  At least not yet.  “I wish we were in a different spot,” he says.  “But I do not believe that – at this point – I would say look out, we’re headed for drought.  I hope that it changes, but we’ll have to see how things turn out in a few more weeks.”

Montgomery says unusually warm and dry weather has farmers anxious to get in the field.  Montgomery says he understands why – but advises farmers to proceed with caution.
