LA Times opposes Prop 37

Opponents of Prop 37—the California ballot initiative that would require special labeling on foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs)—have received a boost from The Los Angeles Times.

In an editorial this week, the Times encouraged a “no” vote on the issue, calling the proposed law “problematic on a number of levels.”  The Times opines that the proposal is “sloppily written” and says that there is little evidence that GMOs are dangerous to people who consume them.

At the same time, the paper complains about “lax federal oversight” of genetically engineered products and concludes that the use of antibiotics in food animal production is a bigger threat to public health than GMOs.

Recent polls indicate that over 60 percent of California voters are in favor of Prop 37.
