Kansas wheat tour reports unprecedented damage

The coordinator of the Kansas Wheat Tour says in the more than 50 year history of the tour there have never been conditions like this year.

Dave Green, Executive Vice President of the Wheat Quality Council, tells Brownfield up to 20 inches of snow over the weekend caused major damage to wheat in western Kansas.  He says while the extent of losses is not yet known, the first day of the tour reported above-average yields.

“We’re having difficulty with the wheat that’s matted down under the snow.  Obviously we can’t give it a good evaluation, but the wheat fields that are up and haven’t had snow—yesterday we averaged 43 bushels an acre.  Last year on the same route, we would have averaged 47 bushels per acre.”

He says last year Kansas had record wheat production, so parts of the state that have not been impacted by the weather are off to a good start.

The tour will travel six more routes across the state today and conclude in Wichita for final results this evening.
