June poultry production up 1% on year

The USDA says domestic poultry production in June was up 1% on the year at 4.123 billion pounds. The total live weight of all poultry was 5.443 billion pounds. Ante-mortem condemnations were 12.759 million pounds, 0.23% of the total live weight, and post-mortem condemnations were 38.989 million pounds, 0.94% of monthly production.

A higher rate of slaughter and heavier weights for chickens helped cancel out a lower total live weight for turkeys. The monthly chicken slaughter was 774.858 million head with a total live weight of 4.775 billion pounds, both up 1%, and the average live weight was fractionally higher. The turkey kill was 21.174 million head, down 3% from June 2016, and the total live weight was 652.406 pounds, 2% lower, but the average live weight was 1% heavier at 30.81 pounds per bird.

For the year to date, U.S. poultry production is 23.937 billion pounds, 1% ahead of the 2016 pace, with chicken production up 2% and turkey production fractionally higher.

The USDA’s most recent set of cold storage numbers implied better export and consumer demand for chicken than for turkey.
