Judge upholds decision to lift GE crop ban in Hawaii

A federal judge has agreed with a lower court that ruled three Hawaii counties cannot ban or regulate GMO crops and pesticides. Several years ago, voters in Maui approved a measure to ban the cultivation and testing of GE crops in those counties. Monsanto and Syngenta are among the seed companies that farm in Hawaii. The 9th circuit of appeals judge said Hawaii’s state pesticide law preempts any county or local laws.

Monsanto Corporate provided this statement to Brownfield Ag News:

“We’re proud to be part of Hawaii’s agricultural community, and look forward to continuing to support the communities in Maui, Molokai and Oahu where our 1,000 local employees live and work. We’re listening and we’ve heard the concerns some people have about GMOs and today’s farming practices.  Our commitment to ongoing dialogue with our neighbors doesn’t stop today. We understand the responsibility we have to farm sustainably and to work collaboratively, and we welcome the opportunity to continue having conversations with members of the community.”
