Iowa packer ready for China beef demand

The CEO of the only Iowa meatpacking plant approved to ship beef to China, so far, says they’ll be able to handle the increased demand, “Right now we do 55-hundred head, we’ll do six days 66-hundred head, and then we made do an additional 100 head a day just depending on the volume that we do. The company is built for expansion without building onto the building.”

Jeffrey Johnson with Iowa Premium says starting up imports of U.S. beef to China after more than a decade will likely NOT impact prices in the U.S., “Cattle production, if you look at the numbers, is up across the U.S. I think that the industry is ready for the Chinese consumer,” he says. “It’s been coming, so the whole chain has to be prepared for it.”

Johnson says they ship meat to South America and Japan as well and they get all their cattle from family-farm-feeders in Iowa and nearby states.
