Iowa ag secretary Northey confirms interest in working at USDA

Iowa ag secretary Bill Northey confirms to Brownfield that he has discussed possible positions in the USDA with new Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue.

“I have talked to the Secretary, before he was Secretary. I’m very interested in being able to serve,” Northey says. “I love my job as (Iowa) secretary of agriculture and look forward to working with the administration from that position.  Or if there’s another position that’s offered, I certainly would consider that as well.”

In his weekly conference call with ag reporters this morning, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley said Northey could be in line for a top position at the USDA.

“What position in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, I’m not sure. I know he’s had some conversations with Perdue, but Perdue couldn’t move—and he hasn’t been guaranteed anything, but I think there’s some real possibilities there,” Grassley says, “But that’s about all I can say because that’s about all I know at this point.”

Northey is in Washington, D.C. today and will participate in the White House farmer roundtable this afternoon.
