International ag development with women farmers

Programs ICONA humanitarian organization says the vast majority of farmers in developing counties are women.

“About 90 percent of food in sub-Saharan Africa is handled by women and so if you’re not reaching women, you’re not reaching farmers.”

Liz Marcey with CARE USA tells Brownfield the organization originated by sending care packages to people in need around the world. She says efforts are now focused on providing resources to impoverished communities and in many cases working with women farmers.  “We have communities that for every dollar we have invested in women in agriculture, it has generated $29 dollars for the community over 10 years.”

Marcey says last year CARE worked in 95 countries and reached more than 65 million people around the world.
