Indiana Quarter Horse Association awards final Horse Award

For the 50th and final time, the Indiana Quarter Horse Association honored a deserving 4-H horse and pony member with the IQHA 4-H Horse Award.

Ginny Tauer, a former award recipient who now runs the program, says the award opens doors for 4-H members.

“A lot of these kids that show at the 4-H level don’t have a registered horse or they need a nicer horse and that’s expensive,” she says. “So this gives kids an opportunity to have a horse they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise.”

The quarter horse was donated by the Whitney Farms. Alexis Loyd, a member of the family, tells Brownfield since this is the last year for the program the judges looked for different qualities in the winner. She says in previous years judges might have overlooked younger applicants knowing they had more opportunities to apply in the future.

“This year we didn’t base it so much off that but what they have at home- the resources they have available and what the overall goals would be and if they could succeed with those goals,” she says.

Cash Hollowell of Portland, Indiana, was this year’s recipient. She says she has big plans for her new horse.

“(I plan) to show her at Congress and maybe qualify for the World Show and a lot of open shows,” she says.

In 1968, Bud Alderson wanted to recognize outstanding 4-H horse and pony members and promote the Indiana Quarter Horse Association (IQHA). His vision resulted in one deserving Indiana 4-H member being gifted a registered quarter horse each year at the Indiana State Fair.
