Indiana planting progress: Corn 56%, Soybeans 23%

Scattered rain showers and cooler temperatures kept many farmers out of the field last week.  According to the Crop and Weather report 56 percent of the corn crop has been planted, just 5 more than the previous week and 29 percent of the crop has emerged.

Soybean planting pace is steady with 23 percent planted and 4 percent emerged.  As fields begin to dry – soils have formed a crust and some farmers are concerned about emergence issues.

Winter wheat is progressing at a normal pace with 68 percent jointed, 59 percent headed, and 67 percent rated good to excellent.

The abundant moisture and more spring-like temperatures have 79 percent of hay fields in good to excellent conditions.  The first cutting of alfalfa hay is 4 percent complete.
