Indiana crops: corn 55%; soybeans 56% good to excellent

Inconsistent showers have hindered crop growth in Indiana this past week.

According to the latest USDA Crop and Weather report, 55 percent of the corn crop is rated good to excellent, with 65 percent of the crop in dough stage and 20 percent dented.

Bill McDonald, an agronomist with Ohio-based Seed Consultants, says yields have been hurt by decreased soil moisture.

“There are a lot of big holes out in the fields— I’m not talking about 2 acres, I’m talking about 5-6 acre spots in the field— that are going to make little to nothing,” he says. “I think that that’s going to hurt us in our top-end yield.”

Soybeans are rated 56 percent good to excellent. Ninety-three percent of the soybean crop is blooming and 78 percent is setting pods.

Sixty-one percent of the third cutting of alfalfa hay is complete.

Topsoil moisture is 74 percent and subsoil moisture is 79 percent adequate to surplus.
