Incorporating conservation practices

Cover cropping systems and other conservation practices are common for many of Indiana’s farmers.  Gene Schmidt president of the National Association of Conservation Districts and an Indiana farmer says he realizes making big changes can be difficult and it can be a challenge to incorporate new farming practices – like cover crops – on farms.

But – he tells Brownfield education and outreach are part of the reasons conservation practices are so successful in Indiana.  “Whether it is going out and doing some test plots – so the person can actually see the benefits in person,” he says.  “Our goal is to help them understand, expose them to a new opportunity, and show them what the benefits might be for them.”

Schmidt adds that healthy soils are imperative to feeding a growing world population.

He says local Conservation Districts are great resources to learn more about what conservation practices could be right for your farm.
