Illinois farmer grateful for the rain

Scattered rainfall continued in Illinois last week.  Pike County farmer Jeff Schone says it’s a change from when he was getting just enough rain to get by.

“Now, with the temperatures warmed up and probably 4 to 5 inches of rain that we’ve received over the last few weeks, or a couple, and things are looking really good right now,” Schone told Brownfield Ag News Monday.

Schone, along with other farmers, is about to do his last pass of spraying soybeans.  He says that rain and warm weather brought on a few weeds, but not too much to handle.

“I feel pretty confident that this final spraying will take care of [the weeds] and with the crop canopying, it should hold them back and hopefully things will work out,” he said.

About 94 percent of the Illinois soybeans are planted and are 72 good to excellent.  Corn condition is rated 76 percent good to excellent. Winter wheat condition is 59 percent good to excellent. Topsoil moisture is 95 percent adequate to surplus.
