Illinois farmer calls it quits on social media

An Illinois farmer is calling it quits.  Jeremy Wolf made his decision known on social media.

“Farmers, historically, don’t want to talk about these things,” said Wolf, on the YouTube video.  “Nobody wants to talk about finances.”

But that’s just what Jeremy Wolf did in the 7-minute social media post, laying out what led to his decision to close the gate.

“The numbers just don’t work,” he says on the video.

The Homer, Illinois, farmer came back to farm with his dad in 1999, but with investments in machinery, inputs and land rent, he tells Brownfield financial pressures brought him to a difficult decision.

“I’ve always said ‘if you can’t make money at farming, there’s no point in doing it.’”

Wolf is prolific on social media, Twitter mostly, resulting in him making friends all over the country.  This post served two purposes.

“For me it was a great way to get that message out to all my friends everywhere without having to repeat the story over, and over, and over,” Wolf told Brownfield Ag News Wednesday, “and to start the conversation to let guys know you’re not out there alone; there’s all kinds of people going through it as well.”

And after harvest, he’ll determine how to liquidate pricey equipment and write the next chapter in his life.

“You’ve got to figure out what you’re going to do to go forward.”

  • One word-mismanagement! They always had yo purchase new equipment to look big. You can’t spend more than you make-simple economics.

  • This guy is nothing but a publicity seeker! Totally mismanaged this farm. He’s more worried about his next tweet and snack time with Jeremy than running his operation. Anyone who unloads corn on his semi truck hood to wake up the driver and post it on social media deserves to go under!
