HSUS calls ag response “paranoid”

Increasing efforts to restrict livestock industry practices by animal rights groups in the U.S. are defended by the head of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Wayne Pacelle recently spoke with Brownfield, “All of our campaigns related to food animal production are about humane production standards, humane transport and humane slaughter. I mean, I defy anyone to show me any statement where we say we want to eliminate animal agriculture.”

Pacelle says concerns in agriculture that HSUS campaigns to crack down on irresponsible dog breeders, like the one in Missouri, have anything to do with livestock agriculture are unfounded. Pacelle says, “It’s an irrational and paranoid response.”

Pacelle says the goal of HSUS is not to shut down livestock production but to improve the treatment of animals raised for food. Members of ag groups in states such as Ohio and Missouri continue to work toward stopping what they say are HSUS attempts to eventually shut down livestock production in their states.

Dale Ludwig is one of the leaders of the Missouri Animal Ag Coalition and is the Executive Director of the Missouri Soybean Association.  He tells Brownfield one only need to look at the track record of HSUS in other states, where they often start with an issue that deals with pets, raise vast sums of money, then follow up with additonal regulations on animal agriculture.  “I think they continue to misrepresent what the facts are and they can say things like we are paranoid,” says Ludwig. “All you have to do is look at what they have done in other places” and ” you could make the assumption that’s what they will do here.”

An HSUS-backed ballot initiative in Missouri to crack down on dog breeders is gathering momentum. Pacelle says they will have enough signatures to place it on the November ballot.  Ludwig says Missouri will be ready.  A proposed constitutional amendment supported by the Missourians for Animal Care Coalition passed the Missouri House earlier this month.  It is now in the Senate.  Ludwig says the state legislature is ready to respond, if necessary, by placing the proposed amendment before voters in November. The amendment would protect the rights of Missourians to raise domesticated animals as long as they are treated in a humane matter “without the state imposing an undue economic burden on animal owners.”

In additon, Karen Strange with the Missouri Federation of Animal Owners, has sued the state to stop the “Puppy Mill” initiative.  Strange takes issue with much of the ballot initiative language.  For one, she contends the terms “puppy mill” and “puppy mill cruelty” are “likely to deceive and mislead voters.”

  • Pacelle said, “All of our campaigns related to food animal production are about humane production standards, humane transport and humane slaughter. I mean, I defy anyone to show me any statement where we say we want to eliminate animal agriculture.”

That statement says it all, or actually what it doesn’t say says the most. True, there is not a single document out there that says HSUS is out to end animal ag…but please show me a document with the production methods they approve of. Because HSUS is so shifty, one has to read between the lines. No matter what pratices are put forward, HSUS will find a reason to disapprove of all of them and thus no more animal ag.

HSUS is great about tossing words like “humane production standards”, “humane transport” and “humane slaughter” but they are never defined by HSUS and are always changing.

Through ambiguity HSUS is able to say they “don’t want to end animal ag” but in reality they can weasel words any way they want to in order to do jsut that, end animal ag.

  • “I defy anyone to show me any statement where we say we want to eliminate animal agriculture.” Okey, dokey!

    1) “One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.” –Wayne Pacelle quoted in Animal People, May, 1993

    2) “My goal is the total abolition of all animal agriculture” –Former ALF spokesman & now HSUS coordinator, John Goodwin

    3) “We would be foolish and silly not to unite with people in the public health sector, the environmental community, [and] unions, to try to challenge corporate agriculture.” Wayne Pacelle at ‘Animal Rights 2002’ convention (July 1, 2002)

    4) Here is a regular link & a Tiny URL to a great article that spells out your specific anti-farm/pro-vegan agenda regarding farm animals in detail:

    5) That nutjob you hired as your pet mad scientist, Michael Greger, insisted over CDC statements to the contrary last year that “The worst plague in human history was triggered by an H1N1 avian flu virus, which jumped the species barrier from birds to humans and went on to kill as many as 50 to 100 million people in the 1918 flu pandemic. No disease, war or famine ever killed so many people in so short a time. We then passed the virus to pigs, where it has continued to circulate, becoming one of the most common causes of respiratory disease on North American pig farms.” (HSUS website: http://tinyurl.com/y8bskfu)

    7) “We’re against animal fighting and killing animals for fur…. We want Americans to eat fewer animals,” Wayne Pacelle, DVM News, Jan 1, 2008.

    8) “Human population growth is ultimately one of the most significant that we as a movement have to grapple with. It’s a simple equation that more consumers translates into more animals raised for food….For the sake of the animals, there’s nothing more powerful than changing your diet.” Wayne Pacelle, Vegan.com , October 1998.

But really, Wayne, your masterpiece is to be found in the way you wish to insert yourself into every level of government policy and legislative intervention into the lives of Americans: http://www.hslf.org/pdfs/agency-issues-recommendations_2009.pdf

    You’re one scary dude!

  • “My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.” JP Goodwin, employed at the Humane Society of the US,
Would that be good enough Wayne..or do you need more..
    if so how about this:
“We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding. . One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.” Wayne Pacelle,

of course Wayne casually dismisses all of this and claims it was ‘youthful folly”.. yea sure.. and a leopard changes its spots.
all of that tofu must be affecting his brain

  • Anyone who believes that Wayne Pacelle and his vegan sycophants at HSUS and their sister organization PETA have the animals and consumers best interests at heart has got to be nuts! Their goal, as stated repeatedly by HSUS leaders and staff, is the complete abolition of animal agriculture. Look at their tax returns. Whereas they had fundraising expenses in excess of $24 million featuring puppies and kitties, HSUS only contributed $400,000 to animal shelters. Only $400,000! They ought to be ashamed! Less than 1 penny out of every $2 sent to HSUS ever makes it to animal shelters! Check out Humanewatch.org and also go to the videos posted on YouTube to hear HSUS leaders discuss their hopes for a Vegan only world.

  • From above”

“All of our campaigns related to food animal production are about humane production standards, humane transport and humane slaughter. I mean, I defy anyone to show me any statement where we say we want to eliminate animal agriculture.”

I will oblige him with the following:

“We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding …One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.”
    — Wayne Pacelle, Animal People News, May 1993

Wasn’t too hard to find. myabe wayne should try and remember things he has said before or at least research to make sure that he isn’t backpedaling.

  • Here are two articles that clearly show the HSUS’s true intentions. HSUS A squeaky wheel or a doomsday prophecy Young producers counsil. Is HSUS a threat to Mo agriculture Corner Post. Please google them. They will open the eyes of any open minded skeptic. They are written from interviews with the directors of the HSUS. It is sad when the AR side repeatedly lies in the main stream media. Even sadder is when we the animal ag producers defend ourselves against the falsehoods and slander they sling we are quoted as being paranoid and abusive. This infuriates me to no end. Look out at the Mo farms as you drive down any road or interstate. Do you see any of what the HSUS refers to as the norm? As for 3,000 puppy mills. Please tell me where they are? There are well under 2,000 state licensed kennels in Mo. If the HSUS knows of over 1,000 unlicensed sub-standard facilities it is their moral obligation to report them to operation Bark alert. This is a Mo ran operation, not a HSUS one as they would love to take the credit for it. IF urbanites do not study the true agenda before signing they are setting this country up for a major fall. Not only will we be a pet free nation but a hungry one as well.

  • It is time that we in agricultureand others that support us, band together and put this dangerous organization out of business. (Those of you in local production, etc., don’t be fooled by Wayne. He will treat you like a chicken, bring you into the fold, then ring your neck). The time we all spend trying to dance to their tune is rediculous. Let us all get back to raising livestock as we see fit, not as Wayne wishes we really didn’t at all. We all need to support Humane Watch. it’s about time someone had the courage to take him on, straight up! I hope everyone will save some of his lines, which he “chellenged” folks to come up with. They are great fodder for “letters to the Editor”, radio call in’,s etc. Fight Fire with Fire!!!

  • Great quote from Pacelle, ” I mean, I defy anyone to show me any statement where we say we want to eliminate animal agriculture.”

Has everyone heard the expression “Actions speak louder than WORDS”? The day Wayne Pacelle sits down and eats a 20oz T-bone from a cow he feels was humanely raised and slaughtered is the day I’ll start believing his “words”.

We are not fooled, Whiney Wayne. It’s not paranoia when people are really out to get you (and your animals).

  • HSUS recommends reduction of meat consumption to reduce cruelty. They don’t qualify that with any animal welfare practices they believe are “cruelty-free”.

HSUS tolerates meat consumption only so much as it must along its path.

Now, I don’t have a problem with the HSUS’ goal. It’s free to pursue it. I do have a problem with dishonesty, but I don’t think HSUS will come clean. They’ve learned alot since those statements in the ’90s.

  • Oh, we believe you Wayne.
That’s why I regularly buy meat and other animal products from producers who are accepted by the H$U$ as humane producers.
What’s that you say? There AREN’T ANY? What about the egg producer who had your blessing for his cage free, all organic eggs? That’s right, you told him to STOP SAYING H$US APPROVED.
Of course, I only use recipes from the H$U$ for my animal agriculture products. What’s that you say? There AREN’T ANY? Don’t tell me that every single recipe on every single H$US owned site and publication is completely meat free and free of other animal agricultural products! It can’t be so!
And I certainly only get my companion animals from ethical breeders. I am that breeder. And did I just hear you and your minions say repeatedly there is no such thing as an ethical breeder? That everything everyone owns should be spayed and neutered before even attaining a safely breedable age? Am I not fighting diligently against just such laws in my home state, happily funded and heavily supported by H$US? Seems to me you would prefer nothing more than the extinction of my beloved breed- and if you can’t manage it through legislative processes, you’ll try to poison them by marketing a happyhappyjoyjoy sounding food like Humane Choice- a completely VEGAN dog food whose primary ingredient is soy and isn’t even manufactured in the Unites States. Am I somehow misunderstanding your vegan message when you are spending millions year to produce and market a food for pets that contains NO MEAT? When you attempt to force a vegan lifestyle on animals as well as people?

I defy you, Wayne, to stand beside American farmers and conscientious breeders of purebred companion animals, in public, and state, I SUPPORT YOU.

I dare you. I double DOG dare you.

  • Their legislaion may not specifically call for the abolition of all animal ownership. Animal rights drive producers out of business in one of 2 ways. They either raid them on an individual basis and steal their animals or they pass legislation that makes it financially or physically impossible to carry out. No they don’t “outlaw owning animals” They will just make it impossible to own them and then claim ” it’s not our fault”

  • I am so happy to see more and more people are spitting out the H$U$ Kool Aid! Oh what a tangled web we weave,,,,,,,,,,Wayne! Keep seeking the truth everyone!!!!! Spread the word, let people know H$U$ is not what they believe it to be.

  • Barbara, the link you sent has a note:

“Home » Truth About The Humane Society of the United States

    Story Removed Per Request.”

I wonder who requested the story be removed . . . I think we can guess.
Here’s one that still exists, but I expect the reporter will be under pressure to revise it. The story really does expose a little ‘too much’ about the real goals of HSUS:
    http://www.reflector.com/news/humane-society-addresses-state-puppy-mills-bill-28320

Dog breeder equals “Puppy Mill” according to Alboum, the HSUS lobbyist in North Carolina. It’s all about the numbers, so what about the claims that HSUS “supports responsible dog breeders”? They claim enforcement is only “complaint” driven, but of course we know all about the underground puppy police here in my state, so it seems safe to presume NC has the same thing going on.
