High capacity well bill priority for Dairy Business Association

Mike North, President-Dairy Business Association

The new President of the Dairy Business Association says they have unfinished legislative work to do.  Mike North tells Brownfield access to fresh water is vital.  He says, “At the top of the list is high capacity wells. Dairies cannot operate in Wisconsin without water.  That’s a fact, and the reality for us is we need to make sure that there’s good legislation in place to help us move forward in that regard.”

The high capacity well bill passed the State Assembly in 2016 and a similar version passed the State Senate, but the legislative session ended before a compromise could be reached.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told the DBA delegates Wednesday he will work to get the bill passed again.

North says DBA is also monitoring local ordinances and moratoriums that circumvent the state’s livestock facility siting law.  A few towns and counties have enacted ordinances and moratoriums to prevent expansion or creation of CAFO’s in their jurisdictions.

Along with his DBA duties, North is a commodities broker and consultant through his business, Commodity Risk Management Group in Platteville.

North was elected President of the Dairy Business Association during their business meeting at the Dairy Strong Conference in Madison Wednesday.  The new Vice President is Tom Crave.  Cindy Leitner is the Secretary and Lloyd Holterman is the Treasurer.  New board members include Amy Penterman from Thorp and Lee Kinnard from Casco.
