Great Lakes Hybrids turns 95
One of the oldest U.S. seed companies is celebrating 95 years this harvest season – and decades of innovations for farmers.
Doug Little, General Manager of Great Lakes Hybrids, tells Brownfield the company was founded upon principles that still hold true today: technology and innovation. “We’ve stayed local and we’ve stayed true to our roots, and that is building strong relationships with our dealers and the growers that they have.”
Little says over the years innovations have transformed to the needs of farmers with major advances in hybridization, Roundup Ready in the mid-90s, BT technology for rootworm, and now Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans and precision technology.
In 1921, the company started as Michigan Certified Seeds in Fairgrove, Michigan, and today seed is also grown throughout Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin.
