Grassley calls for new farm bill in 2017

Confirmation Hearings For Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor ContinueIowa U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley is calling for a new farm bill to be completed in 2017.

The current farm bill runs through 2018, but Grassley says with low commodity prices and falling farm incomes, Congress needs to act sooner.

“If the price of corn was near the cost of production, I wouldn’t be saying this—but I think we need to do a 2017 farm bill instead of a 2018 farm bill, and preserve crop insurance,” Grassley says.

Grassley serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee. He is up for re-election today against former Iowa lieutenant governor Patty Judge.

A recent Des Moines Register poll showed Grassley with a 23 point lead over the challenger.
