Grain association calls for transparency in rail investigations

The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) wants the government to be more transparent in how it investigates freight rail issues.

Rail transport is monitored by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) and the association says recent rule changes allow investigations of railroads to be kept confidential and non-public. NGFA is now calling on the STB to start providing public notice of the practice or notice to the subject of a potential investigation.

The association is also urging the STB to be more public when informing freight companies about the outcome of investigations that are discontinued, and the reasons for doing so.

The Surface Transportation Board oversees all rail shipments, which includes shipments of grain, feed and processed commodities.
