Future of USDA under Trump unclear

Ag leaders say it’s unclear what the USDA will look like under a Trump administration.

Jon Doggett with the National Corn Growers Association says it’s imperative that president-elect Donald Trump put the right people in place who can be effective policy makers.

“I was around when Bill Clinton came to town and it didn’t work for the first year. Looking at the first hundred days they took all the mistakes they could make in those hundred days and they made twice that many in the next hundred days. That came because they didn’t have people in place, they didn’t have people who knew how things worked,” says Doggett.

Roger Johnson, President of the National Farmers Union says Trump hasn’t been specific on Ag policy or a potential Ag Secretary throughout his campaign.

“Conventional wisdom was that this wasn’t the guy who was going to get elected so we didn’t talk about that. There’s not enough specificity in policy statements or campaign plans in Trump compared to what Hillary’s were,” says Johnson.

Trump brought together Ag leaders, and former governors to advise him on Ag policy during his campaign. Both Dogget and Johnson were on panel about the future of Ag policy following the election at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting Convention in Kansas City.
