Frost benefiting soybean harvest
A weekend frost is helping speed up soybean harvest for one Michigan farm.
Jeff Briggs farms 2,200 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat in Willis, in Southeast Michigan. He tells Brownfield the wet growing season is starting to pay off. “We had lots and lots of rain and in spite of that, we’ve been getting tremendous yields.” He expects this year’s soybean yields to be his best ever.
Even with overnight temperatures over the past week dipping in the 30s, Briggs says it’s not been a problem. “It made harvesting soybeans a little bit easier.” He says, “All of our corn has reached black layer, so it didn’t hurt us in anyway, it’s only helping us.”
He says his soybean harvest is just about wrapped up for the year and expects corn harvest to pick up in the next week.
