Food & technology discussed at South By Southwest conference

Some people not involved in agriculture have gotten a taste of food production technology.

Dairy farmer Michelle Schilter from Chehalis, Washington was part of a panel discussion at the South-By-Southwest conference in Austin, Texas Monday. She tells Brownfield most participants were not producers and were surprised by the extensive use of modern technology in farming.  “So many of us have apps on our phones that you can go and you can look at this cow and find out, you know, what her production was the last time you tested her milk, when did she calve, when should she next be bred, and I think it just really surprises people how much technology plays into dairy farming.”

Schilter says the subject of GMO plant technology didn’t come up during the South By Southwest discussion.

She says the dairy industry has many high tech job opportunities and more are on the way, as new developments make dairies more efficient and sustainable.

South By Southwest is an annual week-long festival of technology, film, music, comedy, and gaming.
