In-field soil sensing

h2014_soilThe Climate Corporation has developed an in-field soil sensing network to help farmers customize management to soil variability.

Chief scientist Sam Eathington says the technology is in early testing, but the network will collect a large amount of field data, at a more frequent and granular level. The sensors will be used to create maps of soil texture, organic matter and pH levels.  The network includes an in-field nitrate sensor to help farmers more efficiently apply nutrients.

Eathington says in-field sensors will turn fields into living data systems that integrate into the Climate FieldView platform. Other data sensors being researched include precipitation, field equipment and additional soil sensors.
