FDA approves new food nutrition labels

Top StoryThe Food and Drug Administration has approved updates to food nutrition labels that make changes to sugar and fat, among other things.

The new labels must show how much added sugar is in food products. The Obama administration pushed for that change while the food industry pushed back, saying it would cause confusion among consumers because added sugars and naturally occurring sugars are the same.

The new labels will print the maximum recommended amount of daily added sugar consumption – the equivalent of 12 and a half teaspoons.

The label will remove “calories from fat” while still breaking out ‘Total Fat, Saturated Fat and Trans Fat.’ The FDA says research shows that the type of fat is more important than the amount.

Larger food makers will have to use the new labels beginning in mid-2018. Smaller food makers have an extra year to comply.
