Farmers say MPP needs repairs and re-naming

Farmers told a Wisconsin Congressman the Margin Protection Program not only needs to be repaired, it needs to be renamed.

David Cooper with FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative says many farmers paid thousands of dollars each in premiums for the MPP program in the first year totaling millions of dollars, with most of them not seeing a dime back because of the feed cost formula. Cooper says that MPP is perceived as so bad, most farmers wouldn’t sign up for it, even with changes, because they just don’t trust the program.

Other farmers attending a discussion with Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy Tuesday confirmed they also bought higher coverage levels early on in MPP but only took the minimum requirements after that knowing the program they were now locked in to would likely not help manage their risk. Cooper said farmers need the flexibility to select from other programs including the LGM program.

Congressman Sean Duffy met with farmers and agribusiness leaders at Sternweis Farms near Marshfield, Wisconsin Tuesday, which is the host site for the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.
