Farmers have just over three weeks left to sign contracts for safety net programs.  Crop farmers have had to pick which new USDA safety net program they want for the next five years, under the 2014 Farm Bill.

Brownfield Ag News asked Southeast Missouri Farmer Chris Porter what he thought about the choices overall, the Agricultural Risk Coverage and the PLC, Price Loss coverage, “Confused. There’s just – there’s so many ins and outs of it, it’s really hard to get a grasp on it. So, your local crop insurance agent is a big help and your local extension service. We talked to them and they helped guide us through everything.”

What did Porter choose? He tells Brownfield, “I did a little bit of both. PLC in corn and rice and ARC on the soybeans.”

Porter farms in New Madrid County, in the Missouri Boot heel and Brownfield interviewed him and farmer Justin Ling (pictured above) following the crop tours at the Delta Research Center Field Day in Portageville this week.

Farmers have until the end of this month, September 30th, to sign up.
