Farmers busy spraying for weeds

Southeast Minnesota farmer Keith Schrader is busy controlling weeds when weather allows.

“I’ve been spraying my corn.  I sprayed everything that didn’t have any herbicide down, and there was a lot of giant ragweed and velvet leaf coming.  Now I’m into the acres where I had a pre-emerge on, and there’s still plenty of weeds coming.  But real manageable.”

Ahead of recent thunderstorms, Schrader tells Brownfield conditions near his home in Nerstrand have been good for spraying.

“We’ve had some really nice weather for spraying (and) the fields have dried out.  So I feel comfortable everybody will get across these fields and get these weeds under control very shortly.”

Schrader says his soybeans are having some emergence problems because of soil crusting, and hopes the rain will help alleviate the problem.
