Farm Bureau concerned about RFS rumors

The president of Minnesota Farm Bureau says rumors about changing the point of obligation under the RFS have members concerned.

Kevin Paap tells Brownfield if President Trump issued an executive order shifting the burden of who is required to blend ethanol into gasoline, oil refiners would no longer be incentivized to include the renewable fuel.

“There’s some real confusion.  I think there’s a lot of (rumors).  It really would be great to have all of agriculture moving in the same direction.  And, quite frankly it would be great to have all the ethanol groups moving in the same direction together instead of at each other.”

He’s referring to the Fuels America Coalition severing ties with the Renewable Fuels Association amid reports that RFA was working with the White House to alter the point of obligation in exchange for fewer Reid Vapor Pressure regulations.

“As you get into tradeoffs and things like that, certainly some concerns.  Some would argue (this change) would profit directly some of the people involved.  Still, the devil is in the details but is something from a Farm Bureau perspective we’re going to monitor very closely.”

Coincidentally, the U.S. House and Senate introduced legislation Thursday that would extend the RVP waiver to gas blended with 15 percent ethanol—allowing retailers to offer E15 without restriction from June 1st to September 15th.
