Farm bill needs tweaks, but no major changes

Leaders of the Senate Agriculture Committee say the nation’s farm and food programs need tweaking, but shouldn’t require major changes.
At a news conference prior to a farm bill field hearing in Manhattan, Kansas, committee ranking member Debbie Stabenow said there are a couple of commodities that will need special attention.
“Dairy, where things didn’t work as well as we hoped with what we wrote, and the cotton folks also have some concerns,” says Stabenow.
Ag committee chairman Pat Roberts described the budget situation as “severe”, but he says one program that won’t be cut again is crop insurance.
“We gave at the store, $6 billion and then all of a sudden the leadership popped up and said we’re going to cut another $3 billion. Not on my watch. We’re not going to do that,” says Roberts.
Roberts and Stabenow say they will fight to keep farm bill spending at the same level as in the 2014 bill.
