Students can become certificated for agricultural careers while attending community college.  Michigan State University’s Institute of Agricultural Technology has partnered with several community colleges meet the growing demand in the industry.

Institute Director Dr. Randy Showerman says the partnerships offer MSU courses and hands-on training in participating communities.

“We have a commitment that we want to be able to take our certificate programs from the university, work with the agricultural industry within a region along with the community college, to provide specialized training programs for students.”

He says agreements exist with Montcalm Community College, Southwestern Michigan College, Delta College, Northwestern Michigan College and Grand Rapids Community College.

Showerman tells Brownfield, in the last two years program areas have been updated.  Current programs include fruit and vegetable production, agricultural operations, landscape management, viticulture and horse management.
