European milk now cheaper than bottled water

An over-abundance of milk in Europe has made it cheaper than water.

CNN reports the combination of a Russian import ban, weakening Chinese demand and the removal of EU production limits has resulted in a liter of milk costing around a dollar. A liter of bottled water in the U.K. typically costs $1.50.

Many European dairy farmers are now forced to sell their milk for less than it costs to produce it.

Protests have been reported in Brussels as producers call for the reintroduction of production quotas, which were abolished earlier this year.

The EU said Monday it will provide farmers the equivalent of $550 million dollars in emergency support.
