Ethanol plants to install steam turbines to reduce energy use
POET LLC is installing steam powered turbines in its Ohio and Indiana ethanol plants to help reduce energy use. Plant manager Rick Fox in Marion, Ohio, says the turbines will use residual steam from the boilers used in the ethanol making process.
“So we’re going to take that steam coming off those boilers, run it through the turbines first and then take and run it through our process. So we won’t be using more of a significant amount of steam and we’ll be able to generate that additional amount of electricity,” says Fox.
Fox tells Brownfield 6 biorefineries will upgrade to the new system reducing electrical usage by a third.
“Minimize our waste, always looking for ways to reduce any residual from our process and try to find a way to recover that be it heat left in water from the process, recovering the water, whatever the case is we try to recover everything,” says Fox.
The upgrades are expected to be completed in 2017.
