EPA tightens pesticide applicator requirements

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finalizing standards for restricted-use pesticide applicators.  The agency’s stricter standards will require those who apply restricted use pesticides to be at least 18 years old, and to be recertified every five years.

The EPA says the action reduces the likelihood of misapplication because the pesticides may only be applied by certified applicators or those under their direct supervision.

EPA is requiring specialized licensing for methods that pose greater risks, such as fumigation and aerial application.  Additionally, those working under the supervision of certified applicators will now receive pesticide training.

Some states already have the stronger federal requirements in place.
